Designing for Dementia Conference

/

At Stretto Architects, we believe great design starts with understanding the people who use our buildings.

Attending the Designing for Dementia Conference in London was a valuable opportunity to explore how architecture can better support people living with dementia, while creating environments that are inclusive for everyone.

One message resonated throughout the day:

"If you've met one person with dementia, you've met one person with dementia."

Every individual's experience is different, and our buildings need to reflect that. From carefully considered lighting, acoustics and material choices to colour contrast and intuitive wayfinding, thoughtful design has a profound impact on people's independence, wellbeing and quality of life.

What was particularly interesting was the discussion around balancing the needs of people living with dementia alongside those of other neurodiverse users. Rather than searching for a one-size-fits-all solution, the conference highlighted the importance of co-design—working alongside the people who will use these spaces to create environments that are safe, supportive and genuinely fit for purpose.

These conversations reinforce our approach at Stretto Architects. Whether we're designing healthcare environments, later living communities or residential developments, we're committed to creating places that are functional, inclusive and centred on the people who use them every day.

A huge thank you to the organisers and speakers for an insightful and thought-provoking event. We're looking forward to continuing the conversation and applying these lessons to future projects.
